Difference between Fake Perfumes and Perfume Clones

People often fail to realize that there is a major difference between perfume clones and fake perfumes. I will be showing the difference between fake perfumes and the perfume Clone, and what makes a fake perfume illegal and a clone is legal. Also I will be leaking some secrets by giving examples of Original perfumes and their clones.

So What is a Perfume clone or cloned Perfume?

Perfume clones were necessitated as a result of people loving the scent of a particular high end brand of perfume but the price range been higher than what an average/middle or low income earner can afford. Sometimes the reason for the high cost of some high end perfumes are not only due to the high quality natural ingredients used, the packaging, bottle, research and other factors contribute to the final cost. When I refer to high end, I am talking about perfumes in the range of #60,000 and above.

Perfume Clones are relatively less pricier options that are slightly similar, very similar or exactly the same in terms of scent to a more popular and expensive original perfume. Clones have a different visual appearance from the original, that means they will come in a different bottle, pack and branding from the original. Some clones are really excellent and potent perfumes on their own with good performance and longevity, some of them are quite popular without the consumer knowing that they are a copy of an existing perfume. Quite a number of them are so good that if you perceive them you cannot tell a difference between them and the original. Examples are the clones of Creed Aventus like Armaf club De nuit intense, supremacy silver and Mont Blanc Explorer which are between #15,000 - #30,000 while Creed Aventus retails for over a #100,000.

Perfume clones are made mostly by reverse engineering.

Are perfume clones legal? Yes they are.

A perfume clone is legal firstly because a perfume smell cannot be patented. As long as the company cloning refrains from using the same bottle, brand name and packaging as the original then they will have no legal issues. Most ingredients used to make perfumes are extracted from nature, e.g essence of flowers like, Rose, iris Jasmine, fruits like Apple, oranges and pineapple these are smells that cannot be patented. The only thing that can be trademarked is the perfume name, name of the designer and the description of the perfume. Also it is illegal to mention the name of the original brand anywhere while marketing the Clone. Most clones are sold by word of mouth, like Armaf Club De Nuit Intense,  some people noticed the  similarity between it and Creed Aventus, they started talking about it and there was a buzz around it with the information spreading about it.

The issue of cloning is more of an ethical one than a legal matter because it is unfair to copy what someone has spent a lot of time, research, money and energy to put together and then you make money from it without giving credit or paying royalties to the original creator.

Fake Perfume

A fake perfume is an exact replica/copy of an original existing perfume, it has the same visual appearance and comes in the same pack, bottle and branding as the original. They are now popularly called COPY. The only difference you would notice between a fake perfume and the original is in the smell and the performance (longevity and strength). It is targeted at deceiving the buyer into believing he is getting the Real Deal. These days it is very difficult to differentiate between an authentic perfume bottle and a fake one. See below

The major difference as stated earlier between a fake perfume and the original tends to smell quite different, but with fake that are called   copies the smell could be similar to the original but very watered down. Even though you cannot tell them apart by looking at them but like this say the beauty of the pudding is in its taste. The smell and performance of a fake will always disappoint you.

There is a great danger often overlooked by people that purchase fake perfumes knowingly. Perfumes are usually absorbed into the skin and because some of the active ingredients of fake perfumes including urine(surprised? It is used as a pH balance), bacteria, antifreeze and some other chemicals. There is tendency for inflammation of the skin and dermatitis to develop.

Fake perfumes are illegal all over the world but that has not stopped the demand. And where there is demand there will definitely be suppliers. The demand for fake perfumes are high because they are cheaper to buy, but if you consider the risk involved in  having some of this ingredients so close to your skin and sensitive areas like your neck (close to your face) then you will realize it is not worth the bargain.

I shared 7 tips on how to identify fake perfumes in the link below because apart from the fact that it is a rip-off to pay good money for a perfume that would not perform in terms of longevity and projection, fake perfumes pose a risk an adverse effects on our health.
